NOTES

1. Quotation from Jeff L. Rosenheim, Photography and the American Civil War (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2013), 147.

2. Born in England, Thomas W. Bankes came to the United States in the 1850s and set up shop in Helena around 1860. He continued to earn his living as a photographer after the war in Little Rock (U.S. Census, 1st Ward, Little Rock, Pulaski County, 1870). Bankes’s photograph of the refugee camp is in RG 3323-06-12, Nebraska State Historical Society, Lincoln. My thanks to Linda Hein, reference assistant, and Dell Darling, in digital imaging, for their assistance in providing copies of the photograph and for permission to publish it.

3. A recent find by Martha Jones of a sketch of washerwomen is a rare exception; see Martha S. Jones, “Emancipation Encounters: The Meaning of Freedom from the Pages of Civil War Sketchbooks,” Journal of the Civil War Era 3 (December 2013): 387–402.

4. Maria Mann Letters, Papers of Mary Tyler Peabody Mann [Mrs. Horace Mann], Manuscript Division, Library of Congress.

5. Rosenheim, Photography and the American Civil War, 26.
